Our Story
A small Ottawa shop with roots in the High Atlas Mountains.
How It Started
Straw & Sun was founded to bring the ancient craft of Moroccan straw weaving to Canada. We work directly with a cooperative of women artisans in the High Atlas Mountains — women who have been weaving with natural straw and palm leaf for generations.
Every bag starts in a small village in Morocco. Raw straw is dried, softened, and shaped by hand over many hours — then finished with leather handles and, in our embroidered styles, intricate hand-stitched floral patterns. Each bag then travels to Ottawa, to our hands, and then to yours.
Our Mission
Every purchase directly supports the financial independence of the artisan who made your bag. We work directly with cooperatives — no middlemen — so your money reaches the makers. When you buy a Straw & Sun bag, you're not just getting a beautiful object. You're participating in a fair and direct exchange between maker and buyer.
The Craft
Real straw. Real hands. Real imperfections. Each piece takes hours to create. The slight variations you see — in texture, color, the exact curve of a handle — are signatures of the artisan, not flaws. This is what handmade means.
A Note on Variations
Because these are 100% handmade from natural materials, no two bags are identical. Colors may vary slightly from photos depending on your screen settings and the natural variation of the straw. Slight differences in size (±1–2 cm) are normal. These are features, not defects — they're proof that a person made your bag.
Where We Are
We're based in Ottawa, Canada. Orders ship from our hands to yours — usually within 1–2 business days. We ship across Canada and offer free local delivery in the Ottawa-Gatineau area for orders of 2 or more items.
